In 1857, the SS Central America (the Gold Ship) sank.
At the time, it was carrying 13,600 kg of gold. The wreck of the ship was discovered in 1988, but only 5 percent of the wreckage has been examined. In 2014, Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc., a company that focuses on bringing wrecks of ships to shore, began excavating the shipwreck again.
The company recovered 15,500 gold and silver coins and 45 gold bars from the ship's wreckage. The value of the treasure hunt is estimated to be between $100 and $150 million.
