Lake Baikal

 The oldest lake on earth ..............

There is a lake in Siberia, the northern region of Russia, that stands out not only for its beauty but also for its depth. Its name is Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world so far. 

Located in southern Siberia, between the Irkutsk Oblast and the Republic of Buryatia, Lake Baikal is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. It is 49 miles wide and 395 miles long and is believed to be 25 million years old. The maximum depth of this lake is 1,642 meters. This lake also contains about 22-23% of the world's fresh surface water. Due to this feature, it is also known as one of the oldest lakes on earth. Called the 'Galapagos of Russia', Lake Baikal hides an extraordinary biodiversity in its depths.  According to UNESCO, Lake Baikal's enormous size and shape reflect geological changes that have occurred over the past 25 million years. Scientists believe it may have originated as a series of lakes, similar to the Great Lakes of the Americas. However, research into how the lake transformed into the vast body of water it is today is still ongoing. Studies to date suggest that the lake was formed over time by erosion, earthquakes, and the flow of water from melting glaciers. 

Lake Baikal is an archipelago of 27 islands, the largest of which is Olkhon, which is 280 square miles in area. Olkhon, which has a population of 1,500, was connected to electricity via an underwater cable in 2005. Lake Tanganyika in East Africa is the second deepest lake, with Crater Lake in the United States in third place.

Son Doong Cave

Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is known for being the largest cave in the world. It was first discovered by a local farmer in 1991, but the world only learned about it in 2009 through surveys by British cave explorers. The cave is about 9 kilometers long, 200 meters high, and 150 meters wide, with some parts even larger. The cave has its own ecosystem inside — underground rivers, lush forests, and even clouds and rain formed by light holes above. The cave walls are decorated with ancient calcium formations, some of which are millions of years old.



Rudrastra- Asia's longest freight train

Indian Railways has set a new milestone by successfully conducting a trial run of Asia's longest freight train 'Rudrastra'.

The train is 4.5 km long. The trial run was conducted from Ganjkhwaja railway station in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh to Garhwa, Jharkhand, covering a distance of 209 km in 5 hours and 10 minutes at an average speed of 40.50 kmph. The freight trains will be sent from Deendayal Upadhyay Division (DDU) of East Central Railway to Dhanbad Division for faster loading and unloading, said Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Uday Singh Meena. 'Rudrastra is India's longest freight train with a length of 4.5 km.

Rudrastra, the longest freight train in Asia, will speed up the movement and loading of goods. It will not only save resources but also time.  Uday Singh Meena also said that Rudrastra has been prepared by joining three long-distance racks (two goods trains each).

This train has a total of 345 wagons. An empty wagon can carry 72 tonnes of goods. Two engines are attached in front and one rack after every 59 bogies. A total of seven engines are used in it. In a way, a 'Rudrastra' is equivalent to five goods trains lined up one after the other.



K2-18b

K2-18b is the most likely planet to host alien life. Located about 124 light-years from Earth, this planet is described as a "super-Earth" or "mini-Neptune". It is 2.6 times larger than Earth and about 8.6 times more massive.

K2-18b is located in the habitable zone of its star, K2-18. This means that liquid water could exist on its surface. In 2019, the Hubble Space Telescope detected the presence of water vapor in its atmosphere. Later observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2023 and 2025 found the presence of carbon dioxide and methane molecules in its atmosphere. These findings increase the possibility that the planet is a Hycean World.  That is, K2-18b may be a planet with a large ocean above a rocky surface and a hydrogen-rich atmosphere surrounding it.

According to the latest studies, the presence of chemicals dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) has been detected in the atmosphere of K2-18b. On Earth, DMS is mainly produced by marine microorganisms. Therefore, the presence of DMS is considered a "biosignature" for the possibility of extraterrestrial life. In 2025, a group of scientists claimed that there was a 99.7% chance that life existed on this planet. However, for this to be accepted as a scientific discovery, a higher "5-sigma" confidence level is needed. Some scientists also point out that DMS could have formed without biological processes. However, the amount of DMS on K2-18b is estimated to be thousands of times higher than on Earth.  Therefore, studies of this planet are considered a milestone in the efforts to find extraterrestrial life.

Damascus steel

Behind the carbon steel produced by the Chera dynasty of Tamil Nadu becoming 'Damascus steel' .............

The Chera dynasty of Tamil Nadu produced the finest steel by heating black magnetite ore with carbon. They used a crucible process involving magnetite ore, charcoal, and clay, resulting in high-carbon steel.

In the 6th century BC, craftsmen in this region were producing high-carbon steel known as wootz steel, which was later exported and became famous all over the world. This steel was used to make swords of exceptional strength and sharpness. But today it is popularly known as Damascus steel. Between 900-1000 AD, wootz steel and its forging techniques reached the Middle East. 

The city of Damascus in Syria became a major center for manufacturing and trading swords made from this steel.  The distinctive patterns and superior properties of these blades led to the name "Damascus steel." It became synonymous with high-quality, patterned steel.

By the 17th century, the production of authentic Damascus steel had declined, perhaps due to a shortage of the specific ores needed or the loss of specialized knowledge.




Milky Way

In a groundbreaking discovery, Edwin Hubble demonstrated that there are many galaxies in the universe besides our Milky Way. Before this discovery in the 1920s, scientists and the public believed that our Milky Way was the only galaxy in the universe.

The key to Hubble's discovery was a special type of star called Cepheid Variable Stars. These stars fluctuate in brightness over a period of time. There is a relationship between the period of these fluctuations and the star's true brightness. That is, by knowing how fast a Cepheid star blinks, we can estimate its true brightness. By comparing a star's true brightness with its apparent brightness from Earth, we can determine how far away that star is. This acts as a "cosmic milestone" that helps astronomers measure distances in space.

In 1924, Hubble observed the Andromeda Nebula, then thought to be a small "nebula" or star cloud, with the 100-inch Hooker Telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory. He discovered a Cepheid variable star in it. When he calculated the distance to this star, he realized that it was beyond the boundaries of our Milky Way. The Andromeda Nebula was much farther away than the diameter of the Milky Way as it was then known. This discovery proved that the Andromeda Nebula was not just a star cloud, but a complete galaxy similar to our own.

This discovery revolutionized our view of the universe. With it, humanity realized that the Milky Way was just one of billions of galaxies in a vast universe.  After Hubble's discoveries, he also devised a scheme for classifying galaxies based on their shape (the Hubble sequence). These discoveries became the cornerstone of modern cosmology.



Mountain Man- Dasharath Manji

Dasharath Manji: The amazing man who carved a path through a mountain alone in 22 years ......................

People made fun of him, but he continued his work for 22 years. He was Dasharath Manji, known as the mountain man. He carved a path through a mountain alone. He dedicated 22 years of his life to his village and made a difference in the lives of the people of a small village in Bihar.

Do you know why a landless farmer named Dasharath Manji carved a path through a mountain in the Gehlur hills of Bihar using only a hammer and a chisel? To provide easy access to medical facilities in his village. Directed by Ketan Mehta, Manji - The Mountain Man is a documentary about the life of this man.

Here are some facts about this mountain man:

The villagers had to travel 70 kilometers to get medical help in the nearest town.  In 1959, Dashrath Manji's wife Falguni Devi died without medical attention.

In memory of his wife, he carved a path through the Gehlur hills to provide easy access to medical care for his village.

Working day and night for 22 years, he demolished the hill. The path is 360 feet long and 25 feet deep. This reduced the distance from 70 kilometers to one kilometer.

He worked from 1960 to 1982. For this feat, Manji became known as the 'Mountain Man'. He died of gall bladder cancer on 17 August 2007 at the age of 73. To honour his achievements, a hospital has been built in his name to serve the villagers.

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta has described him as the Shah Jahan of the poor. He has also made a documentary on his life.

In 2006, the Bihar government nominated his name for the Padma Shri award. When a film on Manji's life was announced, he was on his deathbed. Put his fingerprints on a contract and gave the rights to make a film on his life.
