Skeleton Lake - Roopkund

At an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Himalayas, there is a small lake hidden in the snow. The locals call it “Roopkund”. But the whole world knows it by a terrifying name – “Skeleton Lake”.

Have you ever wondered why?

Every summer, when the snow melts, hundreds of human bones emerge from the shores of that lake.

Brains, skeletons, everything… calmly, as if waiting to tell someone’s story.

Those who first saw it thought that they were the bodies of Japanese soldiers who died during World War II. But upon examination, it turned out that they were very old. Some were 1200 years old, and some died later. Then the question arose – how did these men get to such a high altitude, in a place where there is heavy snowfall?

A local legend is that once a king and his group were on a pilgrimage, when they were crushed by a deadly hailstorm.

But science says – people died here not in one disaster, but in many periods. Even stranger, some of their DNA is similar to that of the Greek region!
